Song associations happen with everyone. You know hundreds of songs and ever so often associate them with different events, people and phases of your life. This post is my take on that.
500 miles
This was the first english song he remembered singing in public. He had a good voice and he used to go for Hindustani music classes. His music teacher thought he would be perfect as the lead singer for this song. He learnt the song and practiced it many times over with the girl who was supposed to sing with him. She had a great voice too. He often wondered where she was. Did she continue topping her class wherever she went? He also thought about how aptly the song described his life, now. At 23 with no job and a huge student loan to pay he could not go back just yet.
Here without you
The song made her weep uncontrollably. Her mind went through an emotional turmoil for those three minutes which springs only from a freshly begun long distance relationship. It was sickening to her. She thought it was the end of the world or maybe something worse. 7 years down the line it was a different tune of course.
Fuel
The first mark of rebellion in her. She had to pick something to define herself and defy the expected. Teenage years are turbulent but they leave discernible marks of their chaos in you. Metallica was the way out. It made her feel powerful and gave her the confidence which her looks did not provide. It gave her the false security of being better than her peers. She was different and this acted as a good springboard. However, it remained just a springboard. The fall was inevitable. Now, she was looking to integrate into normalcy. Old habits die hard though.
Iris
It was doomed to begin with. They both knew it. The age old intractable traditions. Conforming to what the society deems right. This song captured exactly what they both had to say to each other. It was a karaoke night and she sang it for him. He did not know the lyrics too well and listened to it with a resigned expression. Resigned to fate and to the fact that her voice was just not suited to singing.
Snow
The only neutral song for him. It was the one song which was "his" as he liked to believe. He had no events associated with it, no person associated with it. He could find some peace with that song. It did not send him spiralling into the past or hurtling into the future. It kept him in the present. That's what your favourite song should be.
Hard to Concentrate
Everyone looks for their relationship song. They proudly strut it around, "our song" they call it. He wanted this to be "her" song. If the girl he eventually fell in love with would agree, this had to be the song he would sing to her. It was too embarrassing for him to admit that he had even thought of such a thing. But, it was at least a non cheesy song in his opinion.
